5 Denture Myths, Debunked

If you think you might need dentures, you might be feeling hesitant because you’ve heard some of the common denture myths going around. Dentures have changed a lot over the years, and getting dentures is not as scary as you might be thinking.

At Aesthetic Dental Partners, we want to help you make the best decision possible, and that’s why we’re debunking these 5 denture myths.

#1: I’m too young for dentures!

There are a lot of reasons why a young person might need dentures. Dentures are simply designed to replace missing teeth. Your age doesn’t factor into whether or not you need dentures.

You might have lost teeth due to an injury or an illness. It’s also possible that gum disease caused tooth loss at a younger age. The important thing about dentures is that they restore normal function to your oral cavity.

#2: Dentures look fake.

That might have been true when George Washington was wearing dentures made of wood, but modern dentures are completely indistinguishable from your natural teeth. The modern fabrication technology for dentures is so good that they will conform to your mouth with a seamless fit.

#3: I’ll have difficulty eating.

Like any other change in your life, you have to get used to your new dentures, but most people adjust very quickly. Typically, you’ll be a pro within a few weeks. It helps to start with eating small quantities of softer foods during the first month or two after getting your dentures.

Once you feel more comfortable, you shouldn’t have any difficulty eating chewier meals.

#4: They fall out easily.

Properly designed dentures don’t shift or slip easily. If your dentures are slipping or they feel loose, you need to let your dental team know so they can adjust the fit. Additionally, if you have a full set of dentures, it is normal for your jaw to shrink as you get older. Your dentist will need to reline your dentures as that happens.

Once your dentist adjusts the fit, you shouldn’t experience any more problems with slipping or loose dentures.

Dentures smell bad.

Dentures don’t normally smell bad if you take proper care of them. You should brush them to remove plaque, and you should also clean your mouth after you take out your dentures for the night. If you soak your dentures as instructed by your dentist and take proper care of your oral hygiene, your dentures won’t smell bad at all.
