What You Eat Truly Matters
You may think sugar is enemy number one when it comes to your teeth. But the reality is that all foods high in sugar and carbohydrates can be damaging to your teeth.
Your mouth is loaded with bacteria. Foods and beverages high in carbs and sugar contribute to the production of plaque acids that can permeate the protective surface of teeth. This leads to the potential for dental decay and possibly gum disease.
The daily diet should be comprised of vegetables, fruits, dairy, protein, and healthy grains. You can enjoy snacks, but they should be limited to items like nuts, cheese, yogurt, fresh fruit, and veggies. The occasional sweet snack can be enjoyed on a limited basis.
Your beverage of choice should be water … you can drink water in many ways. Unsweetened coffee and tea; water flavored with fresh fruit or a splash of sugar free flavoring provide ways to enjoy water. Soda (both regular and diet) can damage teeth, and the many varieties of flavored drinks available often contain loads of sugar.
Ways to Help Achieve a Great Smile
In addition to watching your diet, it only takes a few minutes each day to help keep your teeth looking their best.
Brush twice every day with a fluoridated toothpaste. Set a timer or use an electric toothbrush so you will brush the recommended two minutes every time.
Floss every day. Your toothbrush only reaches about two thirds of the surface of your teeth. Flossing will remove food debris your toothbrush can’t reach.
Visit our family dentist twice a year. Teeth will be thoroughly cleaned removing harmful plaque that formed since your previous visit. A dental exam will help assure that your mouth is healthy providing that great smile to go hand in hand with a healthy body. Call Aesthetic Dental Partners today to schedule your visit.
