25 May Common Oral Health Problems: Plaque and Tartar
Plaque is a sticky substance made up of bacteria that attaches to the surface of the teeth from food and beverage consumption. Most plaque can be removed from teeth if they are brushed and flossed right away while plaque is still soft. But after plaque has hardened on teeth, and becomes a yellow coating that appears to settle at the base of the tooth, this is tartar. And the only way to remove dental tartar is a visit to the dentist.
The common oral problems associated with plaque and tartar are dental decay and gum disease.
Decay: Once a small crack or fissure in the dental enamel has occurred, bacteria in the form of acids permeate the protective enamel and start to decay the tooth. The cavity starts small, and patients that are vigilant with keeping their appointments with the dentist every six months will be fortunate to have a cavity caught in its early stage. This allows for a much smaller repair than one that has gone undetected for an extended period.
Gum Disease: The bacteria in tartar allowed to stay on teeth can initiate gingivitis. The early symptoms may include bleeding gums, swollen red gums, and chronic bad breath. If symptoms are ignored, gingivitis can graduate to periodontitis which can mean loose teeth or gums pulling away from teeth. Immediate attention is needed at this stage to protect against tooth loss.
Visits to the dentist every six months have multiple advantages:
- Plaque and tartar are removed from teeth.
- Teeth are polished to look their best.
- Teeth are examined for potential problems associated with decay or more serious problems like oral cancer.
- Preventive measures can be explained such as fluoride treatments to protect dental enamel. Or for teeth not already impacted with decay, the surface of the teeth can be treated with a dental sealant that will literally seal the surface of the tooth where most decay starts.
