Should a Denture be Worn at Night?

The use of dentures is the most common and often the most affordable means of replacing missing teeth in patients. In fact, prosthetics, specifically dentures made from a variety of materials, have been crafted and worn by people for centuries. Edentulous patients, those missing or will be missing an entire arch of teeth require full dentures, while patients missing a few teeth may opt for partial dentures that possess metal fixtures to anchor them in place during the daytime.[pullquote] Because dentures rest directly on and slightly overlap the gums, removing them during sleep allows for the gums to breathe and for saliva to dilute acid and harmful bacteria.[/pullquote]

Dental laboratory technicians construct both full and partial dentures so that they resemble the appearance of gums and teeth. These prosthetics are typically made from a variety of materials, which can include porcelain and acrylic. Dentures are made to fit the specific shape and size of a patient’s mouth. Supported by the natural shape of the gums and jaws, dentures are to be worn all day for a short period of time when first used, to help the patient adjust to their new prosthetics. However, after this initial period, dentures should be removed for six to eight hours a day for cleaning. The best time for removable is obviously during sleeping hours. Because dentures rest directly on and slightly overlap the gums, removing them during sleep allows for the gums to breathe and for saliva to dilute acid and harmful bacteria.
