Helpful Tips for Dental Health
Brushing – You need the right tools and technique … these include a soft bristle toothbrush, fluoridated toothpaste, and a light touch. If you scrub your teeth using a back and forth sawing motion, you can erode enamel prematurely and damage gum tissue.
An electric toothbrush is a great tool. The rapid movement of the brush head does all the work … all you have to do is guide the brush to reach the front, top, and back of all teeth. Since you need to brush for two minutes twice every day, an electric toothbrush usually includes a timer that lets you know when you’ve brushed the prescribed time.
Flossing – There are a variety of products on the market that will allow you to find one that you will enjoy using. Flossing at least once a day will remove debris that your toothbrush can’t reach.
Snacking – Everyone enjoys a snack, but what you eat can greatly impact your oral health. Avoid sugary treats … try more healthy fruits and vegetables, dairy, or nuts and seeds. Do not drink soda as both regular and sugar free are acidic contributing to dental decay. Water is a better choice.
Chew sugar free gum to promote saliva production … saliva is a natural mouthwash.
While you may want to brush immediately after eating, take note. Many foods contain acids that can soften enamel. Brushing too soon can be damaging to dental enamel … wait at least 30 minutes to brush.
Change your toothbrush every three months or sooner if bristles appear worn.
