Tips to Think About
- It’s important to brush two minutes at least twice every day. You cannot do a poor job of brushing and expect that those dental visits twice a year will allow you to keep your teeth and gums in good health.
- It’s not just candy and cookies that cause cavities … decay is a result of acids eating away protective dental enamel. But it’s not just sugar that produces these acids. Carbs from chips, crackers, and many snack foods are just as damaging.
- Drink water! Many beverages tout themselves as “healthy”, but can be loaded with sugar. Water is the healthiest beverage (tap water contains fluoride), and is free when enjoyed from the tap. Avoid both regular and diet soda; but if you do Indulge in a soda, do so with meals.
- Avoid tobacco … there is no such thing as a healthy alternative to smoking or chewing tobacco. While the latest craze of vaping may seem to be a healthier alternative to cigarettes, there can be unknown contents in e-cigs that can make them as harmful as tobacco.
- Flossing is as important as brushing … your toothbrush only reaches about two thirds of the surfaces of teeth. You need to floss to remove what your toothbrush missed. In addition to removing unwanted debris from between teeth, flossing helps to keep gum tissue invigorated which is important for good dental health.
Gum Disease
The onset of gum disease can escalate quickly resulting in needed dental treatment to prevent the possibility of tooth loss. Watch for symptoms such as bleeding gums, chronic bad breath, pain, and gums appearing to pull away from teeth. See your dentist immediately … gingivitis caught early is very treatable. Don’t delay if symptoms persist as you are putting your dental health at serious risk.
