Lumineers are made from porcelain, a product that is naturally stain resistant. However, being resistant to stain does not mean impossible to stain.
Beverages like red wine, coffee, tea, colas … anything that contains a dark pigment has the potential to create stain. Patients with veneers are encouraged to limit these beverages, and if you do imbibe in them, rinse or brush as soon as possible following consumption.
Foods that have staining potential include many fruits like berries, beets, tomato sauce, and many other dark sauces. Since most of these foods have many healthy attributes, you are not discouraged from eating them altogether, but be aware of the possibility of stain and rinse/brush accordingly.
If you have ever eaten candy, a popsicle or chewed gum that altered the color of your tongue, imagine what that could do to your teeth … best to avoid these empty calories for many reasons.
There are actually a couple of tips on how to consume cold beverages that might help prevent teeth stains.
Drink through a straw. This allows the beverage to bypass the teeth. NEVER consume hot beverages through a straw. Your tongue is a great temperature tester … drinking hot beverages through a straw could result in burns to your throat and esophagus.
Don’t swish your beverage. Holding the liquid in your mouth just allows longer access to your dental enamel.
Your cosmetic dentist will provide you with thorough instructions on the care of your Lumineers to keep them looking their best. This includes brushing and flossing daily coupled with keeping appointments with your dental provider every six months.
While Lumineers are very strong and durable, just like dental enamel, they are not invincible. Do not chew ice, bite into hard objects, or use your teeth to open packages. If a veneer does chip or break, do not attempt to repair on your own. A visit back to your cosmetic dentist is warranted.
With the proper care, Lumineers can enhance your smile for many, many years. To learn more about this cosmetic treatment option, contact our skilled team at Aesthetic Dental Partners. Call 210-616-0858 today to schedule your visit.
