06 Nov How Teeth Change with Age
Aging involves a natural process that we all hope to experience. Teeth are also likely to undergo changes so the best way to maintain great dental health as you age is to stick to a regimen of daily brushing and flossing, eat as healthy as possible, do not use tobacco, and make sure you keep up on all the things that dentistry has to offer to keep your teeth in great condition as you grow older.
Teeth are made up of two basic components … the interior is the dentin and the exterior of the tooth is covered with a protective layer called enamel. It is often the wearing away of this protective enamel that leads to cosmetic changes, and a breach in enamel can result in decay, disease, or infection.
Enamel can be eroded by brushing too hard or using the wrong tools when brushing. An electronic toothbrush is an asset that does a thorough job of brushing; you just need to guide it around your mouth to reach all teeth front and back. A built in time lets you know when you have brushed the recommended two minutes each time you brush.
Teeth grinding and jaw clenching often get their start during periods of sleep. This can wear away enamel and result in uneven dentition and/or broken teeth. Teeth grinding can start due to stress, nervousness, or due to a malocclusion. Your dentist will see evidence of grinding on regular visits and provide suggestions to help control this damaging habit.
Gum disease can ravage your teeth, and even the most diligent person can experience problems with gingivitis throughout life. The key is to see your dentist at the first sign of gum disease, and deal with it. Tobacco users are much more likely to face problems that can result in dental decay and lost teeth.
Thankfully dentistry has many ways that we can keep our teeth looking and feeling great as we advance in years. Teeth whitening to treat dental stain; composite resin (a tooth colored material) for dental bonding and treat decay; porcelain veneers to hide a variety of cosmetic maladies; and ways to resolve tooth loss from partials to dental implants.
Brush and floss daily; see your dentist every six months for cleaning and exam to keep your teeth and mouth healthy and looking its best as you age. Contact our office today to make an appointment!
