How to Prepare for Your Upcoming Sedation Dentistry Procedure

How to Prepare for Your Upcoming Sedation Dentistry Procedure

Many patients suffer from anxiety when they need to go to the dentist. Sedation dentistry offers a solution for those patients who might otherwise forego regular dental visits. So, how do you prepare for a sedation dentistry procedure? There are several steps to consider to make sure your procedure goes smoothly.

Drink Plenty of Water<a href="https://www.freepik.com/free-photo/female-patient-undergoing-surgery_15762898.htm#query=sedated%20person&position=3&from_view=search&track=sph">Image by serhii_bobyk</a> on Freepik

On the day of your sedation dentistry procedure, you won’t be allowed to drink or eat anything. That’s why it’s important to drink plenty of water the day before the procedure. That will ensure you aren’t dehydrated on the day of your appointment.

Don’t Eat After Midnight

Your dentist will want your stomach to be empty before sedating you. Some people experience nausea because they feel like they are floating due to the sedation. If your stomach is full, there is a greater likelihood you might vomit.

Most of the time, your dentist will request that you not eat anything after midnight the evening before your procedure. That will give your stomach plenty of time to empty, making you less likely to have problems.

Dress Comfortably for Your Sedation Dentistry Procedure

Even if you’re coming from work, bring some comfortable clothes you can change into for the procedure. As travelers are well aware, comfortable clothes can make a ‘chair nap’ much more relaxing.

Don’t wear high heels since you may be a bit woozy as you wake up from the procedure. Make sure your clothing is loose-fitting with no tight waistbands. You can even bring your pajamas if that will make you feel more comfortable!

Catch a Ride

You’ll also want to arrange for transportation and have someone else drive you to your procedure and back home once it’s over. Since you’ll be waking up from sedation, it’s better that you not operate a motor vehicle of any kind. Ask a friend, spouse, or other family members to give you a ride so that you can relax and not have to worry about driving yourself home.

Take Some Time

You’ll feel much better about your sedation dentistry procedure if you have sufficient time to recover. So take enough time off work or school to ensure you don’t have to rush right back after the procedure. Taking time to recover is a critical and necessary part of the healing process. It will speed up your recovery so that you can be right back at it much faster than if you push yourself too hard.
