If you suffer from dental anxiety, you’re not alone. Studies show that 25 million Americans avoid dental visits due to fear or anxiety. This common condition can result in severe damage to oral health which may, in turn, lessen your quality of life. Avoiding the dentist can have serious consequences, though. Without regular dental checkups, patients may develop a variety of conditions, including extensive decay, gum disease, and bone and tooth loss.
At Aesthetic Dental Partners we have been putting patients, especially those with dental anxiety, at ease for almost three decades.
During the practice of sedation dentistry patients remain conscious, which allows them to respond to the dentist’s commands. Sedation dentistry is generally a safer option than general anesthesia, which renders the patient unconscious. Sedation dentistry also presents a lower risk of complications over general anesthesia.
When is Sedation Dentistry Used?
Sedation dentistry can be used in a variety of dental care scenarios. It can help a skittish patient make it through a thorough cleaning and examination, but even patients who aren’t anxious about dental appointments can benefit from the practice. With sedation dentistry, patients can tolerate longer treatment sessions, which allow the dentist to perform complex procedures, such as smile makeovers, in fewer appointments.
Methods of Sedation
Nitrous oxide
Gas that’s inhaled through a nasal mask; nitrous oxide is commonly called laughing gas. It is a fast-acting sedation method makes you feel warm and cozy during your dental procedures. The effects of nitrous oxide diminish quickly upon removal of the mask. Most patients resume normal activities immediately following their appointment.
Oral sedation
Taken prior to dental procedures, oral sedation alleviates anxiety and lets you rest in total relaxation while the doctor performs your dental work. You won’t be asleep, but you will be calm and at ease. You’ll likely return to your routine the evening of your appointment.
IV Sedation
Before undergoing sedation, be sure to give Dr. Huriega a complete list of all of the medications you use. This will help to identify any drug interactions that might occur between your other prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines and the sedation drugs.
