15 Jun Sedation Dentistry: What are the benefits?
It is fairly normal to feel a little apprehension about going to the dentist. But for many, their anxiety is so great that they may go years without even having their teeth cleaned. Thankfully, there are tools available that allow everyone to have their dental needs cared for and that is with sedation dentistry.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous Oxide: Safe for patients of all ages, nitrous oxide (often called laughing gas) is mixed with oxygen and delivered via a nasal cone. Anxious patients get a feeling of euphoria; and unlike other forms of sedation, the patient will regain their full faculties right away allowing them to drive home on their own.
Oral Sedation: About an hour before their scheduled visit, the patient will take a prescription medication that will begin to relax them. Upon arrival at the dental office, additional medication is given that further relaxes the patient. The patient is continually monitored for their safety and comfort. Once treatment is rendered, the patient is required to stay at the dental office until alert. With oral sedation, the patient will need a ride both to and from their appointment.
IV Sedation: Often used for oral surgical procedures, IV sedation is administered intravenously. A sedative is introduced directly into the bloodstream allowing the patient to be quickly anesthetized permitting the dentist to perform one or numerous procedures. While the patient remains conscious throughout the use of IV sedation, many patients have little to no recollection of their dental treatment. As with oral sedation, the patient will require a family member or friend to transport them home.
What Sedation Option Is Right For You?
A consultation with your dentist will help to determine what type of sedation dentistry is right for you. In addition to easing anxiety, sedation dentistry is used for patients with physical or mental limitations that prevent them from receiving much needed dental care.
Before any kind of sedation is administered, your dentist will discuss your medical history and review any medications you take. Your dentist and dental staff should be fully trained and have all needed equipment on hand to provide you with a safe and professional dental experience.
So whether it is to relieve your anxiety or assist you for any other reason, our dentists are dedicated to rendering treatment to help you maintain great dental health.
