Getting Started with Dental Implants
At your initial consultation, a discussion about your overall health will be followed by an extensive oral evaluation. Dental x-rays are taken to ensure there is sufficient bone in the jaw. This is a necessary component for a successful implant procedure. Lack of bone will not necessarily disqualify you as a candidate; bone augmentation procedures may be required prior to or at the time of implantation.
The implant itself is a small post that will be embedded in the gums that will eventually support the restoration. While healing occurs following implant placement, bone is encompassing the implant … this process has been coined as osseointegration. Your implant dentist will provide you with the information needed to keep your implant free from infection.
Patients who smoke or use tobacco in any form are advised against using either as this is an additional cause attributed to a failed procedure. If you’re serious about a successful implant process, plan to abstain from tobacco use.
Periodic dental visits are required to make sure the implant process is progressing as designed.
The Final Result
Once the implant has healed, the final step of treatment is to place the cosmetic restoration.
The cosmetic restoration has been designed to match the size, contour, and color of adjacent teeth. An abutment is attached to the post and the restoration is tried on to make sure it fits and looks great. At this time minor adjustments are possible, if required.
The restoration is then secured in place. The patient is now able to enjoy any and all snacks and foods without fear of slippage or movement. Words can once again be pronounced clearly. And most importantly, the patient can smile broadly and laugh without inhibition as teeth have been restored permanently and as naturally as possible.
