What are full dentures?

dentures San AntonioA full denture is needed when all (or most) teeth are missing from the upper and/or lower arch. Whether you experienced tooth loss from trauma, disease, or decay, a full denture will allow you to smile confidently, eat more comfortably, and speak clearly. We often take our teeth for granted not realizing just how important they are to everyday functions. Dentures can help restore many benefits enjoyed before tooth loss occurred.

Why Does Tooth Loss Occur?

While some are genetically disposed to experiencing problems with teeth and gums, tooth loss can be prevented for most. A lifetime of oral care consisting of daily brushing and flossing coupled with regular visits to the dentist to have teeth cleaned are helpful. But for many, lack of a nutritious daily diet; tobacco use; and illness may have resulted in tooth loss. An accident or oral trauma can also cause tooth loss. No matter your age, a visit with your dentist will demonstrate how dentures can enhance your life.

Aesthetics are important at any age … obviously your smile is improved when you have teeth. And missing teeth can result in facial changes due to muscle loss allowing your face to sag. This can add years to your appearance. A full denture can help prevent this from occurring following tooth loss.

Getting the Denture Process Started

A consultation with your dentist will help determine which type of denture is best for you and your lifestyle. Typically a denture is a removable appliance that is made up of an acrylic base crafted to look like your gums with teeth fitted into the base that are made to closely resemble your biological teeth.

The denture process involves multiple dental visits and a few weeks from start to finish. A wax model is made to try in before your final denture is cast.

Once your denture is delivered, some time will be needed to become accustomed to it. Don’t give up prematurely … your dentures may feel awkward at first, but exercise patience with your new prosthesis.

Minor irritations may be experienced – this is normal. Your dentist will expect to see you for adjustments to your denture. Don’t hesitate to reach out as needed.

Denture technology has made advancements in leaps and bounds in recent years. Appearance, fit, and function make wearing dentures a comfortable and secure experience.
