16 Oct What should you look for in a family dentist?
In the absence of a positive referral from a friend or relative, what should be considered when seeking a family dentist?
- Hours of operation – If the office hours are restricted, and are not convenient to your schedule, this will not be a good match for you.
- Emergency availability – Investigate to see how emergencies are handled after office hours. Is there a dentist on call to handle emergencies? This is critical especially when there are children involved. Will the family dentist be able to see you the same day if an emergency occurs during office hours?
- Office staff and equipment – The dentist is the person who delivers dental care; but helpful office staff, knowledgeable dental assistants, and hygienists that are proficient can make or break a dental office. If investigating an office for updated equipment and overall cleanliness, keep in mind that expensive bells and whistles are not indicative on how good the dentist actually is … but a neat, clean office may be a clue to their sanitary standards.
- Likeability – You do not need to be best friends with your dentist to receive excellent care, but you must have a comfort level to ask questions and receive thorough answers for you and all family members.
- If you have questions regarding your potential dentist, a quick call to the state’s dental association will be able to address any concerns you may have.
In today’s economy, many patients may use insurance acceptance as a selection guideline. This should not be the primary consideration, but if it is, make sure you do not rely on the dental provider as the definitive answer. Follow up with your insurance provider yourself to guarantee that the family dentist you have selected does participate with your insurance.
Treatment options, office hours, staffing, and most importantly sanitary observations are all serious considerations that should be involved in selecting a dentist. There is a dentist that will fit your needs, your schedule, and when you find that dental provider you will be tempted to keep them to yourself; but feel free to share with your family and friends. After all, they deserve the best as well.
