What to Expect on Your First Dental Visit

Regular dental appointments are an important part of your overall health. Your first dental visit is important for assessing your current dental health and establishing a care plan going forward.

At Aesthetic Dental Partners, Dr. John R. Huriega and his professional colleagues are passionate about helping you maintain your oral health. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to what you can expect on your first dental visit.

Before Your Appointment

To ensure that your first appointment goes smoothly, we ask that you fill out our new patient forms prior to your visit. These forms provide us with information about your dental history, your medical history, and more. They help us learn about you so we can make your visit comfortable and provide you with the best possible care.

You can also help make your visit more comfortable by planning for time off from school or work as appropriate. We don’t want you to feel rushed, so you’ll want to take as much time as you feel is necessary to feel comfortable during and after your visit.

On the Day of Your First Dental Visit

Arrive a little early—about 15 minutes—so that we can finish up any paperwork and collect your insurance information. If you don’t have dental insurance, we can also use this time to discuss the payment options we provide for our patients.

Your First Exam

At Aesthetic Dental Partners, we consider our patients to be part of our family. That’s why we like to get to know you and your health history. Your comfort is our priority, so if you’re anxious about dental work, let us know before or during your first exam and we’ll be sure to take steps to make your visits as comfortable as possible.

During your first exam, your dentist will do a complete examination to assess your oral health. This may include X-rays and an oral cancer screening. Because the first exam is so comprehensive, you can plan for it to take about an hour. At the end of your initial examination, your dentist will then put together a personalized treatment plan and discuss what you need to do next.

After the examination, you may receive a dental cleaning if the dentist determines it is appropriate. There are some conditions that can delay your first dental cleaning. If you have one of these conditions, the dentist will work to stabilize your oral health first before going forward with a cleaning.

Next Steps

Once you and your dentist have determined the appropriate course of action, we will schedule any necessary follow-up visits, review your payment options, and answer any questions you might have. If you don’t need to schedule any follow-up visits, this is also a good time to schedule your next dental cleaning.
