Here are the dental implant dos and don’ts to get the best results.
Dental Implant Dos
You want to do several things after dental implant surgery to ensure you take the best care of your new teeth. Here are the things you want to do after your surgery.
Rinse Your Mouth
Following dental implant surgery, you want to rinse your mouth with warm, salty water, particularly if you have bleeding. You can do this two or three times a day, especially after eating.
Rest for a Few Days
After surgery, you want to make sure you rest for a few days to get your strength back and let your body heal. The bone of your jaw will grow around the implant.
Follow All Instructions
You need to follow all the instructions your oral Surgeon has given you. This is important for the best results.
For example, you’ll likely need to avoid brushing and flossing for a while following your surgery. Don’t jump the gun and start that kind of oral care until your Surgeon says it’s safe to do so.
Dental Implant Don’ts
Now that we’ve discussed what you should do following implant surgery let’s discuss what you shouldn’t do. Sometimes this is as important as what you do.
Don’t Consume Anything Right After Surgery.
You’ll want to follow your oral Surgeon’s instructions on this, but most of the time, the Surgeon will advise you to avoid eating or drinking for at least two hours after your surgery. So for the first few days, you’ll want to stick to soft foods or liquids that don’t require much chewing.
These might include soft pasta, mashed potatoes, yogurt, milkshakes, and scrambled eggs. You will also want to avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where your new implant is located.
After Dental Implant Surgery, Don’t Smoke or Drink Alcohol.
Smoking and drinking alcohol can affect your body’s ability to heal following surgery. So after implant surgery, you’ll want to avoid these habits, so your body can heal more quickly.
Don’t Exercise Vigorously.
Exercising too vigorously following dental implant surgery can affect your body’s healing ability. To avoid unnecessary bleeding or swelling, you should put off vigorous exercise for a week following the surgery or until your oral Surgeon clears you for this kind of activity.
