An Overview of Porcelain Veneers
A veneer is a razor-thin cosmetic enhancement that’s bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. It is made from high quality porcelain and handcrafted to ensure it complements the anatomy of a person’s smile. When a series of veneers are bonded over the most visible teeth, they can produce the illusion of a healthy, straight, and bright smile.
If you suffer from the following dental imperfections, porcelain veneers may be right for you:
- Stained teeth – including intrinsic tooth stains
- Gapped, crooked, and overlapped teeth
- Teeth affected by untimely tooth wear
- Disproportionate smiles
Receiving porcelain veneers is not an invasive procedure. There is minimal tooth preparation needed and many patients do not require local anesthesia before their teeth are prepared.
The entire process, however, takes about three appointments with our cosmetic dentist. After your initial consultation, the next appointment will involve removing a small layer of tooth enamel to create the space needed to place veneers. Then, molds are taken so that our team can develop the exact specifications necessary to create your custom veneers.
After veneers are fabricated in a dental laboratory, patients will return to our office for their final placement. At this stage of treatment, teeth will be lightly etched to create an ideal bonding surface. Then, veneers are placed over teeth with a strong bonding compound. As the bonding compound dries, final adjustments to each veneer’s placement are made.
Caring for veneers is not much different from caring for teeth. Patients will brush and floss as normal and keep routine appointments for checkups and cleanings.
